- Project Selection and Portfolio Management. This concept of project management attempts to answer simple questions like: how does one select projects? And what are the inputs that cause the project process to begin?
- Strategic Planning. There are certain key fundamentals of management that need to be understood by every project manager. Organization Strategy is one such concept. This section goes in great details to explain strategic planning concepts and goals and objectives. It first begins with answering what is strategy and thereby covering organizational mission, Michael Porter’s ‘5 Forces’, a business model template, Balanced Scorecard Kaplan & Norton.
- Strategic Management Overview. Continuing with strategy it further covers SWOT Analysis, Set (SMART) Goals, goals of the projects. It further explores how do projects relate to strategy by looking at goals of the project.
- Approaches to Project portfolio management. Learn about the 3 project portfolio categories, benefits of Project Portfolio Management and the problems associated with it. Learn how project management is different from project portfolio management as there are different views from senior management on what (and how) should be done.
- Identifying IT Projects. Ideally IT projects are selected based on a planning process. This is necessary as projects need to be aligned to the main business strategy. The Pyramid of Project Selection process states that Strategic Planning is followed by business area analysis followed by project planning followed by resource allocation.
- Project Proposals. Solicitation of Project Proposals is done within the organization and request for proposal from external sources. Proposals need to be ranked as per a certain criteria.
- Project Selection Methods. This section explores the various methods for selecting projects. The 6 methods of project selection explored here are ; Focusing on Broad Organizational Needs, Categorizing IT Projects, Financial Analysis - Net Present Value, Payback Model, Return on Investment, Non-financial Analysis - Weighted Scoring Model, Balanced Scorecard. Next a Selection Model is applied.
- Project Selection. A Business Case is made. The concept of business case is discussed here. Ideally a business case states the problem area into a description. It lists the challenges faces and advocates a specific project as a solution to meeting the problems and challenges.
- Project Success. This discusses how things have changed over the years for Project management and better tools have resulted in less cost and less failure resulting into more success.
