- Types of Supportive Leadership Behaviors. As mentioned above Supportive leadership behavior is concerned with employee’s needs. Thus this behavior is directed towards considering the satisfaction of employees and subordinates needs and preferences. It involves being friendly, encouraging, and informative. It involves being considerate and understanding. Showing concern for followers needs. Showing trust and respect for each other. Being sympathetic to other’s problems. And helping develop abilities and careers of followers (employees).
- Why Supportive Leadership is Effective? This section discusses two reasons why supportive leadership can become effective – one reason is of satisfying people’s need of feeling appreciated, respected and capable at work and the second reason is of belongingness where it keeps the group together. This section also considers the possibility of Supportive leadership Behavior turning out to b Ineffective.
- How to Be Supportive: Skills and Power Bases. This section explains how supportive behavior is practiced and what are the essential skills and power bases required. It lists Communication skills and interpersonal skills as two of the most important skills to be developed along with technical competence that will assist a leader in practicing supportive leadership behavior. Alongwith skills there are three power bases that are necessary for the success of supportive leadership. These power bases include expert power, referent power, and reward power.
