This section begins with explaining the meaning of leadership with its focus on ‘Influencing’ as a key function of management (i.e. planning, organizing, influencing, and controlling). Thus it defines leadership as the ability to influence the behavior or actions of people towards the attainment of goals. It further explores Leadership from the angle of Influence.
- Sources Of Influence. This section discusses the various sources of influence that are available naturally to a person as a result of the context. These sources of influence are expert power; resource power; legitimate power; reverent power; initiative power; reward power; coercive power. - What Makes An Effective Leader? Effective Leadership is the behavior and actions of a Leader that effect top-line & bottom-line growth of an organization; one that serves the aspirations of people; one that impacts humankind; one that involves overcoming adversity; one that admits to mistakes; one who is always for his people. Thus there is no fixed definition or meaning of effective leadership as it effectiveness can be interpreted in many ways.
- Factors Determining Leadership Effectiveness. This section explores the question - Why Are Some Individuals Effective and why are some unsuccessful in their Leadership Roles? The answer to this question is explored in 4 factors. These are Leader’s Qualities, Followers’ Qualities, Environment Theory, Leader’s Actions.
- The Factor Of Leader’s Qualities Explained. These are the innate and non-innate qualities that determine a leader’s effectiveness or ineffectiveness. They comprise of personality traits (Steve Jobs), cognitive skills (Barack Obama), social skills (Silvio Berlusconi), character (Mark Hurd), technical skills (Akio Toyoda), self-awareness (Indra Nooyi), self-regulation (Mahatma Gandhi), empathy (Nelson Mandela). The section offers a critique on Leader’s quality theory to predict the leadership effectiveness.
- The Factor Of Followers’ Qualities Explained. This takes into consideration the attributes of the followers to explain the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of a leader. The follower’s qualities consider follower’s aspirations, follower’s attitude, skills and expertise, cohesion, commitment and character, awareness. The section offers a critique on Follower’s quality theory to predict the leadership effectiveness.
- The Factor Of Environment Explained. The environmental theory states that leadership effectiveness or ineffectiveness is influenced by systems outside the leader and his followers. The environment consist of organizational characteristics, it’s tasks, employee’s characteristics, organization’s external environment. The section offers a critique on Environment theory to predict the leadership effectiveness.
- The Factor Of Leader’s Actions Explained.Neither of the theories above including the Leader’s Qualities theory, Followers’ Qualities theory, and Environment theory help to successfully predict effective leadership. The Leader’s action theory takes steps in different directions. It looks at a Leader’s actions and why and how they were made considering varied styles of leadership actions like consultative, delegated style, participative, autocratic. It considers the why and how in the light of the goals of the entire organization’s business environment. Thus effectiveness of leadership is judged based not on results but actions taken.
