What is Leadership? This section begins with two definitions of Leadership. The first one is by Eric Gregory and the second one is by Peter Drucker. Alongwith the definitions there are two facts pointed out that are associated with leadership that, when organizations succeed we praise leaders but when they fail we blame the leaders.
Meaning of Leadership. This section explains the meaning of leadership in two sets. Set one is the meaning of leadership as a property where leadership is the set of characteristics attributed to those who are perceived to use such influence successfully. Set two is the meaning of leadership as a process where leadership is the use of non-coercive influence to direct and coordinate the activities of group members to meet a goal.
Leaders vs Managers. This section explores the key activities that make up a leader’s job i.e. establish organizational mission and formulate the strategy for implementing the mission while and the key activities that make up a manager’s job are in implementing the organizational strategy. It further explores the difference between Leaders and Managers (Leaders vs Managers).
Leadership Attributes. This section glances over attributes that are considered important for a person to be recognized as a leader. It lists the attributes in three categories - Emotional attributes, Rational attributes and Ethical Attributes.
Leadership Styles. This section covers the well known styles of leadership; Autocratic style of leadership, Democratic style of leadership, Laissez-Faire style of leadership, Charismatic style of leadership, and the Blake and Mouton Leadership Style Grid.
Leadership Theories. This section on Leadership theories covers all the famous theories of leadership often taught as part of a management course, leadership course or an MBA education course. The traditional leadership theories include Trait based theory of leadership, Behavioral Style theories, and Situation theories. The section begins with showing a timeline of evolution of leadership theory. The Trait theory is explained, Behavioral theories explanation includes MGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y and the Blake and Mouton - Managerial Grid, and the Situation Theory covers the Situational Leadership Approach, Fiedler’s Contingency Theory, Hersey & Blanchard’s Situational Leadership theory.
New Leadership Theories. This section explores the contemporary leadership theories covering Transactional Leadership, Transformational Leadership and Charismatic Leadership.
