    2. Habit 5 - Seek First To Understand. Habit 5 is the 2nd habit in the triangle of Public Victory. In dealing with others many people often overlook the most important point i.e. of seeking to first understand the other person’s perspective. Most people attempt to understand others with the intention of replying or to see if they can find something that accomplishes their own needs. Habit 5 can be studied in 4 parts as given below.
    3. Part I - Diagnose Before Prescribe. This section discusses the how to understand others. Understanding precedes action and judgment as understanding comes first. Thus one must first understand the other person to get inside their frame of reference and how they see the world.
    4. Part II - 4 Autobiographical Responses. This section goes further into helping you build your habit of seeking first to understand. It clarifies a very essential and important aspect of understanding others. There are 4 classes of Autobiographical responses we make when we are in communication with someone. These 4 autobiographical responses are Evaluate, Interpret, Probe, and Advise. They show how we when we begin to understand someone we end up responding to them through our own paradigms by default. We must become aware of these to avoid these very responses.
    5. Part III - 4 Levels Of Listening. This section takes you lightly into an important part of understanding others. That part is listening. In communication, listening takes place in 4 levels. And depending on the level of listening one understand what is being communicated. Thus the quality of communication greatly depends on the listening level. Level 1 of Listening is Ignore. Level 2 of Listening is Pretend to Listen. Level 3 of Listening is Selective Listening. Level 4 of Listening is Attentive Listening.
    6. Part IV - The Fifth Level - Emphatic Listening. This section is dedicated explaining to the 5th level of Listening which is very rare. This level is called Emphatic Listening. Emphatic Listening is about entering the other person’s world and seeing it from their view point, living in their reality, experiencing the situations from their perspective. This is the way you understand their paradigms. Emphatic listening is listening with our ears, eyes, and our heart and we listen for the other person’s feelings, meanings and intentions so that you fully understand the other person intellectually and emotionally.
    7. Part V - 4 Emphatic Listening Skills. This section explains the 4 emphatic listening levels. Level 1 is Mimic content. Level 2 is Rephrase the content. Level 3 is Reflect the feeling. Level 4 is Rephrasing Content and reflecting the feeling using both sides of the brain. Discover and learn more inside the Habit 5 Of Highly Effective People Stephen Covey PPT.
