Habit 6 - Synergize. 6 is the 3rd and final habit that completes the triangle of Public Victory taking you from independence to interdependence. In dealing with others one doesn’t have to reach a compromise and one need not go feeling superior or inferior to the other at all. One needs to Synergize with the other as the whole is always greater than the sum of its part. Habit 5 – Synergize can be studied in 3 parts as given below.
Part I - A Tale of Two Tailors. This section cites an example of two tailors. Both these tailors have mastered tailoring and have made unique achievements. In a given hour one Tailor A can accomplish cutting 20 shirts and sewing 50 shirts. On the other hand Tailor X within the same hour can accomplish cutting 50 shirts and sewing 20 shirts. The whole process of making a shirt requires only 2 steps cutting and sewing. Therefore irrespective of each tailor’s ability they end up only making 2 shirts each with complete cutting and sewing. If they combine their abilities they can both put out 50 shirts. This demonstrates how positive synergy (complementing each other’s strengths and weakness) leads to proving that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Part II - The Process Of Synergizing. This section elucidates what synergizing is really about and how it is to be done. Along with the previous Habit 4 think Win-win and Habit 5 Seek fist to understand Habit 6 can be used successfully to create fruitful relationships. Synergizing is therefore about valuing differences in two people that help to build on strengths and compensate for weaknesses. Synergizing leads to an equation of 1+1 = more than 1. They key to synergizing is knowing that all people, including you, see the world not as it is but as you are or as they are through their paradigms. This section further explains how synergizing works with the previous Habits 4 and 5 and completes the triangle of Public Victory for you.
Part III - Creating the Third Alternative. This section explains synergizing further. The third alternative is about synergizing itself. It is the one where your views and the other person’s view both stay right and yet include a third view which allows for an environment of synergize to affirm and create something more from each other’s views.
